22nd April 2015 – Riga, Latvia
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch. Then you have entered the realm of wanderlust Where differences don’t exist. Or nothing such.
I took the Ecolines bus in the morning today, and left from Vilnius to Riga. At just 6 Euros, I had free wifi, free coffee, and the side seat all to myself!
Was in Riga by noon, and had to kill some time till 6 pm, before my host was available to pick me up. So, I decided to do what I do best. Walk around on my own, after keeping my bags in ‘Just Bar’, which is where I decided to meet up later with my couchsurfing host, Guntis.
Funnily enough, I would learn later that I was walking towards his own house! Actually, right in front of his house, I saw this Russian orthodox church, which had me in wonders.
I love contrasts. Here I am in, in a country with a bleak winter life, coming face-to-face with a church with green onion domes! Yeah, I’ve heard of onion domes, those famous ones adorning St. Petersburg and Moscow, but I did not expect to see them in Riga. Or maybe, I just didn’t do my research right.
After a while of clicking around, I returned back to Just Bar, to meet Guntis. Turns out, there was a business networking event there, and I was suddenly thrust into the middle of it. Me! With my backpack and torn jeans and all! In the middle of some CEOs, entrepreneurs, and a few millionaires.
Well, they were largely curious about me here, and presumably, most of them mistook me for some Indian entrepreneur out to see the Latvian business world.
Rudyard Kipling would be pleased as punch with me!
